“Though no one can go back and make a brand new start, anyone can start now and make a brand new ending.” – Carl Bard
As the cold months of winter surround us with weather conditions beyond our control, I have developed a new strategy that is helping me navigate this time in my life. I am adopting the philosophy that I will focus on the moment at hand and be present. That moment may be to enjoy a rare snowfall for the beauty that it brings and not worry about what may or may not happen in my garden this Spring.
I will also not let my life be dictated by the noise that constantly circulates through social media channels. I will live in the present moment and recognize that which is within my control. I did not arrive at this conclusion by myself, but with the help of one of my new favorite books, Meditations for Mortals: Four Weeks to Embrace Your Limitations and Make Time for What Counts, by Oliver Burkeman. You can learn more about his book and how it can help readers to focus on the present moment in the category of The Writer’s Bench at the top of this website.
For gardening tips that may help gardeners with possible damage to plants from freezing winter weather, check out the category of The Gardener’s Grotto, also at the top of the website. One thing that I have learned about gardeners is that they are impatient, myself included. Winter is a time of dormancy for most plants and while we may be inclined to attack the damage, we need to understand what is really happening. Also winter is a wonderful time to plan your garden for the coming spring. I always look forward to receiving seed catalogs and discovering new varieties of plants and vegetables that are available. I dry flowers and herbs for creative projects and culinary use and save seeds of plants that did well for the following year’s planting. Check out the craft that I made of dried flowers from last year.
I had the pleasure of being interviewed for Bella magazine along with another of my Pen Women pals and fellow writer, to discuss creative women in our community. I truly believe that anyone can be creative if it is something that they really want to pursue, at any age. What is it that you would like to try? How are you making a brand new ending?
